Does Aaron Rodgers have the potential to be the greatest quarterback of all time?
Aaron Rodgers has been a part of the Green Bay Packers team since he was drafted in 2005. Since then, Rodgers has led the league in passing yards and interception rates multiple times.
Rodgers also holds the record for the fastest quarterback to reach 400 passing touchdowns and most completed passes without an interception.
Today, we are going to talk about how picking Aaron Rodgers in the 2005 Draft was one of the best choices the Green Bay Packers ever made.
The College Years
Rodgers found it so hard to get into a footballing college that he almost gave up on football to play baseball. There were no Division 1 schools that were interested in taking him, despite the fact that he had a very successful High School career.
Rodgers ended up at Butte Community College in Oroville – in his first year he threw 26 touchdown passes and led the team to a 10-1 record. This was the best the team had ever done.
Rodgers was then recruited to join the University of California, Berkeley. He played with this team for 2 years. In his first year, he threw for 300 yards in 5 different games – breaking the school record.
He threw for a total of 5469 yards in his two years in California and scored 46 touchdowns. He led the league in pass completions.
In 2005, Rodgers decided to enter the Draft rather than complete his senior year.
The Draft
Rodgers should have graduated in 2006 but he decided to forgo his senior year and enter the draft early.
Rodger’s home team, San Francisco, had the first pick in the Draft that year. Rodgers had supported them all his life and was confident that they would be the ones to pick him. However, San Francisco went for a different quarterback, Alex Smith.
Rodgers was picked overall 24th in the draft by the Green Bay Packers. San Francisco skipping over Rodgers is seen as one of the Top 5 Draft mistakes.
The NFL years
Rodgers has spent his entire career so far with the Green Bay Packers. With this team, he has won the Super Bowl once, been named NFL MVP 3 times, and broken numerous NFL records.
When Rodgers joined the Packers, Brett Farve was still their starting quarterback, because of this Rodgers only played 7 games in his first 3 seasons with the team. He did not start any of those games.
When Farve retired, Rodgers took over the role of starting quarterback.
In that first season (2008) he threw for over 4000 yards and scored 28 passing touchdowns. He was also sacked 50 times that season, more than any other quarterback.
In the following years, Rodgers managed to build on his success with the Packers before finally taking them to the Super Bowl in 2011. They finished the season on 15-1. That was the best season that the Packers have ever had in their long history. That year Rodgers was named both Super Bowl MVP and NFL MVP. He was also named AP’s Athlete of the Year in 2011.
While the Packers have not made it back to the Super Bowl in the last 10 years, they have repeatedly made it to the playoffs and have challenged for the NFC champions title. They have only missed 3 playoff postseasons in the last decade.
Rodgers is perhaps most famous for how difficult he is to intercept. He holds the record for most completed passes without an interception – 402 passes. He also holds the record for the lowest interception percentage in one season – 0.3% in 2018. He has led the league in the lowest interception percentage in 5 different seasons.
Since 2008, Rodgers has been a mainstay in the Green Bay Packers team. He has been their starting quarterback since then and since the start of the 2008 season, he has started in every single game he has played.
Rodgers has also led the league in passer rating and passing touchdown ratings for three years. He is a 3-time NFL MVP and a one-time Superbowl MVP.
Super Bowl Performances
Rodgers has only been to the Super Bowl once – but he made it count. Not only did he win the game but he came home with the Super Bowl MVP title as well. This was in 2011.
In this Super Bowl campaign, Rodgers passed for over 1000 yards and was not intercepted during the postseason at all.
Since 2011, the Green Bay Packers have not been AFC champions and they have only gotten close once.
While many consider Rodgers to be one of the best of all time he does not have the trophies to back that up.
Will Aaron Rodgers be the greatest of all time?
Aaron Rodgers is considered one of the greatest passers and he has the best career interception rate of all time (so far).
But will he really be considered one of the all-time greats when he has played in the same era as Payton Manning, Brett Farve, and Tom Brady? Not to mention the new superstars like Patrick Mahomes turning up on the scene.
What does Rodgers have to do to stake his name in the “greatest of all time” claim?
We have no doubt that Rodgers will be a Hall of Famer – but if he wants to be considered one of the best then he is going to have to win himself some more silverware. Brady already has 7 Super Bowl titles, 5 Super Bowl MVP rings, and is a 3-time NFL MVP.
Do the Packers have a chance of winning the NFC and/or the Super Bowl this year? Well, yes! Check out Fanduel’s NFL odds – they are currently joint top with the Bucs and the Cardinals to win the Super Bowl at +500.
If Rodgers can make his way through the vaccination controversy then he has a chance of winning his first trophy for 10 years.
